What is CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) for Adults?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a fantastic evidence based talking therapy that can transform your life and help you to achieve the goals you want. It’s based on the idea that what we do (our behaviour) and think (our cognitions, thoughts, beliefs) affects how we feel (emotions). It looks at how we get caught in vicious cycles of unhelpful thinking traps and maladaptive behaviour patterns. CBT helps break these cycles, to feel better in our mood and overcome anxieties.
There is substantial evidence proving the effectiveness of CBT.
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT as the gold standard for treating various mental health issues, including trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, and OCD, to name a few.
The BABCP is the accrediting body for CBT therapists. They have produced a helpful short video explaining CBT and its benefits. Take a look!

What is CBT for Children and Adolescents?

CBT stands for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. ‘Cognitive’ is fancy word for our thoughts, ‘Behaviour’ is pretty straight forward, this is our actions, and ‘Therapy’ is the framework we use to help you.
CBT, or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, can help with lots of different problems. It can help if you're feeling worried, having trouble with friends, getting stuck on certain thoughts, or if your emotions feel really strong and hard to handle. CBT helps you understand what's going on and feel more in control.
One great thing to know is that our thoughts can be like a superpower. They can change how we feel and act, working to make us feel strong, confident and in control. Sometimes though, our thoughts get all mixed up and make us feel worried or sad. These feelings can then make it harder to deal with stuff and we might stop doing the things we enjoy. If we don't work on this, we can end up feeling even worse.
Here’s an example…
Imagine you have a test at school coming up. You may start thinking ‘I won’t pass this test, I’m not good enough’ (thoughts) then it might cause you to worry, get overwhelmed, have anxiety (feelings) and then you might avoid revising (behaviour/action) because it feels to overwhelming. By avoiding things, it only makes your difficult thoughts and feelings worse and you can get stuck in a tricky trap.
CBT will help you understand these traps and find more positive ways of thinking which helps you break free from these traps!
CBT helps children and young people from the age of 7 years.

What is Parenting Support?

Are you parenting a child of primary school age who is anxious, worried and/or displays challenging behaviours? As a parent of an anxious child, it is difficult to know how to manage this for the best and sometimes our average instinct to protect our vulnerable children might just be working in the quite the opposite direction to what is needed!
Many parents who come to see me already recognise that their approach is not working and want support to get it right. When you get a washing machine, it comes with a manual on how to work it but no-one gives us a manual on how to raise a child! Even when we have a well-adjusted child, parenting can be difficult and that's without the anxieties, worry tummy and challenging behaviours!
I offer parenting sessions grounded in theory and based on empirical data. It’s a step by step approach to managing anxiety in young children and aimed at producing confident parents who know how to encourage confidence in their child and know what to do when their child is worried or afraid.
In addition to anxiety, worry and challenging behaviour. This course can help parents of children with neurodiverse needs. Often when a child has ADHD or ASD they experience anxiety, worry, low mood etc. My Parenting sessions whilst not aimed specifically for the neurodiverse population, have also helped parents manage these challenges as a whole in order to produce more confident children.
The parenting provision I offer is based on Webster-Stratton’s Incredible Years, behavioural theory, attachment theory and social learning theory combined with CBT.
